50s Prime Time Cafe Gluten Free Review

Do you ever crave a good meal from home? Does dining at Disney World with Food Allergies leave you uncertain? Look no further than the 50s Prime Time Cafe in Hollywood Studios. This is my 50s Prime Time Cafe Gluten Free Dinner Review.

After a long day (or week) at the Disney parks, it can be hard to find a meal that really hits the spot. Since I have to order both gluten free AND dairy free, I am always on the hunt for table-dining restaurants. When a reservation popped up for the 50s Prime Time Cafe in Hollywood Studios, I knew I had to give it a try. This is my 50s Prime Time Cafe Gluten Free Dinner Review

The Atmosphere

The 50s Prime Time Cafe was a dining experience that sent you right back to Grandma’s kitchen. The decor was fully “retro”-fitted to make a diner feel like they had been transported back in time. The main waiting area was decorated to look like a living room. When your table was ready, you weaved through various “kitchens” where families were gathered around tables waiting on their food.

We were seated in a small room that looked like an old kitchen and immediately told that we needed to help out and set the table. The waiters pretend to be family members preparing us dinner and our fellow diners were our “cousins”.

We were affectionately referred to as “Princess” and “Sparky” by our waiter and told to “Get your elbows off the table” and “eat all the vegetables if you want dessert”.

These types of shenanigans are not really our style. thankfully we had a low-key waiter who realized this and only really engaged in banter with our “cousins” who found it amusing.

Dinner

The food was the real winner at this dining experience. While the separate allergy friendly menu did not have many options that were marked for both of my allergies (gluten and dairy), our waiter was very knowledgeable about the accommodations they could make.

When I heard that fried chicken was an option, i knew I had to try it. If you’re like me, gluten-free fried chicken is nearly impossible to find at restaurants. But, it is also too time consuming to regularly make at home. I was told that it would be a little longer of a wait to prepare (about 35 minutes) but it turned out to not take that long.

However, if it had taken 35 minutes, it would be worth the wait! This gluten free fried chicken was amazing. I have not had crispy chicken like this in a long time and the serving size was HUGE. My only complaint was that it was a little too salty for my preference, but, I so rarely get to enjoy this dish – it was still a great treat.

One of the great things about Disney dining is that when you order with an allergy, they bring your food out with an “allergy stick”.. This definitely eases my mind when ordering dishes that look “too good to be true” like this fried chicken.

The chicken was accompanied by roasted potatoes and corn. The potatoes were very nice. If you can have dairy, substituting for the mashed potatoes is a good option. The corn was relatively bland and if I could re-order I would definitely substitute it for another vegetable.

Tip

**I have since read that you have to request this allergy friendly fried chicken before you arrive for your dining reservation, however, on this occasion it did not seem to be an issue to order on the spot.

Dessert

The biggest surprise to me was the allergy friendly dessert. My fiancé and I agreed on skipping an appetizer and ordering dessert instead and man, I’m so glad we did!

Typically, the gluten and dairy free options at most table dining locations in Disney are all similar. They include some type of dairy free ice-cream, sorbet, or packaged cookie. However, 50’s Prime Time Cafe sent me back in time with a good Ol’Fashioned S’more.

This was a graham cracker cookie that they layered with a melted allergy friendly chocolate bar, topped with roasted marshmallows and drizzled with chocolate sauce. It was very gooey and delicious, making you feel like you were sitting around a campfire.

Our waiter stayed in character and made us stack our own dishes to be taken back to the sink before bringing us the check. 50’s Prime Time Cafe was a blast from the past and provided some great comfort food even when eating gluten and dairy free.
